Event details & arrangements for the day are as follows:
The 2020 Mendips Lakes and Lumps Ride is taking place on Sunday 14th June 2020.
The Ride starts from the entrance to the Top of the Gorge Festival site (BS40 7XR - see map) and there is plenty of free parking and safe drop-off areas available for riders on arrival.
Registration opens from 7.30am and there's no paperwork for anyone to bring - riders are asked to submit their 'Rider Details' in advance as part of the entry process so on the day itself they simply have to report to the registration desk to sign in, and then it's just a case of heading off to the start when they're ready to go!
Riders are able to set off between 8.30am and 9.00am and, depending on final numbers, they will roll out in small groups approximately 1-2 minutes apart.
Riders are welcome to take as long as they need to complete the course, however the aim/hope is that most riders should be able to finish by late morning/early afternoon so that they then have plenty of time to also enjoy their FREE entry to the Festival itself, and it's hoped that riders will encourage family and friends to come along to cheer them across the finish line and also to enjoy the various Festival activities on the day.
Non-cycling family members & friends etc are able to attend the Festival as spectators or, if they wish to participate in some of the day's other activities, they can upgrade to a Day Ticket on the gate. So non-cycling companions can come along for the WHOLE DAY too, and there will be plenty of activities on offer to keep them amused & occupied while the cyclists are doing their thing!
At the finish riders will be given a token for FREE food from the main Festival site as part of their Ride entry, and of course riders' family & friends are also welcome to make use of the food & drink facilities on offer.
The Ride is fully supported with clear directional signage, as well as comprehensive medical, mechanical and marshal support from experienced providers. A recovery service is also available if needed, and riders are looked after every step of the way!
En route there will be an official refreshment stop where riders will be able to replenish water bottles and make use of toilet facilities (there will also be energy bars and hot drinks available), and of course there are also numerous other appealing stop-off points on this stunning route for those of a more leisurely disposition.
The event is registered with British Cycling, cycling's governing body, and is being run in accordance with its technical regulations, and all signed-in riders benefit on the day from automatic third-party event insurance (provided by British Cycling) as part of their entry fee.
The entry fee effectively covers the cost of putting the event on and charity fundraising, while actively encouraged, is entirely optional. All riders will be asked to at least consider supporting our official Charity Partner, however they are also welcome to support other charities or causes if they so wish - or indeed they can simply participate purely for the personal challenge.
And please note that this is not a traditional 'sportive' where timing chips, energy gels, and time-based rider listings are the order of the day - these are simply not part of this Ride and the emphasis is very much purely on participation and the sheer enjoyment of riding a bike in a wonderful area!
All types of riders & bikes are welcome and actively encouraged; the event is designed to be particularly supportive of newer/less experienced riders; and we really mean it when we say it's NOT a race! There is of course still plenty to challenge everyone (regardless of experience), and we take the view that those who appreciate this can take care of their own timing and specific fuelling requirements - so the Mendips Lakes and Lumps Ride is probably not for anyone who thinks it's impossible to have a great day out on a bike without these things being provided.
It IS, however, most definitely for anyone who wants the challenge and enjoyment of a great day out on a bike, on a great route, in a great event, and in the company of a whole bunch of great people!
Finally, all riders who participate in the Ride agree to abide by the Ride's terms and conditions of entry (see below for full details).
